From tactical urbanism to citizen-driven streets. Rome is scaling up change

07/04/2026

A new call launched by the Municipality of Rome – “Spazi a Colori” – is a powerful example of how cities can reclaim public space through tactical urbanism: low-cost, fast, and community-led interventions.

What makes this initiative particularly relevant is its ambition to go beyond single projects. It aims to create a replicable model of intervention across the city, fostering active participation and contributing to a more polycentric, safe and resilient urban vision.

This strongly resonates with the Streets for Citizens project, where ANCI Lazio is a partner. At the core, there is a shared principle: putting people back at the center of public space through participation, co-design and experimentation.

Key elements include:

– bottom-up proposals from citizens, schools and local communities

– light, fast and reversible interventions

– a structured framework for replication and scaling across neighborhoods

– long-term stewardship, with communities actively caring for the spaces

These elements reflect the same shift we are working on in Streets for Citizens:

➡️ from car-oriented streets to inclusive, human-centered environments

➡️ from isolated actions to systemic and replicable urban transformation

Initiatives like this show that tactical urbanism can become a strategic policy tool, especially when supported by institutions and connected to European innovation projects.

ANCI Lazio is proud to contribute to this transition, bridging local experimentation with European frameworks for sustainable urban development.
