Rome embraces safer streets with the new “Zona 30” in the Historic Center

21/01/2026

ANCI Lazio is pleased to share this important news, which will also be a highlight of the upcoming #StreetsforCitizens project meeting in Rome | 27-29 January 2026. The Department of Sustainable Mobility and Transport has officially established a 30 km/h speed limit across the entire LTZ Historic Center, following the City Council resolution of November 13, 2025.

“This change is about making the city safer and more livable,” says Mobility Councillor Eugenio Patané. “Even the wider streets, relics of a car-oriented past, will now prioritize pedestrians. Our goal is to reduce accidents, protect vulnerable road users, and foster a city that truly serves its people.”

The Local Police of Rome will strengthen monitoring in the new Zona 30, ensuring compliance while raising awareness about the new rules. Commander Mario De Sclavis emphasizes: “Our controls are not just about enforcement—they’re about education and safety for everyone.”

This initiative resonates strongly with the Streets for Citizens approach: small, tactical interventions—like speed reduction, signage, and awareness campaigns—can reshape urban spaces into safer, more inclusive environments.

By embracing slow streets, Rome takes a concrete step toward a human-centered city, where mobility, safety, and social life go hand in hand.
